An entire generation of sailors has grown up with the phenomenon of self-build (or outfitting)  if the budget didn't quite match the wish list. In this way countless unique Waarschips, Hummingbirds, Stringers and Koopmans designs have come into service, varying from indistinguishable from shipyard-built to very personal choices and finishing methods.

With the arrival of the CE mark in 1997 and the advance of increasingly better series ships, building yourself seems to be a thing of the past and a very cumbersome and time-consuming way to realize your dreams. You have to have a lot of imagination and self-confidence (or lack of imagination?) to go against that current and think that you can add something to it.

But every now and then, in a remote shed or driveway, you'll find a “project” where soul and bliss is put into a ship of its own and well-meaning advice about standard ships and the "benefits of renting" makes no sense.  

 

With that background, we started building a steel 50” Vientodora after 2006. After the construction of the hull in Gdansk, the takeover of the timber stock from the bankruptcy of Victoire and the completion in Drachten, we sailed almost all waters from the Baltic Sea to Gibraltar for 12 years until in 2019 after the death of the other owner, we sailed the had to sell the ship. 

Since then we've looked at a lot of ships, but the blood eventually gets where it can't go. Result: since 2 months we are the proud owners of a huge lump of steel and history repeats itself with the construction of our second custom dream ship.

With all the associated consequences: searching for offers and parts on Marktplaats, fitting and measuring and in the meantime studying all CE regulations to actually be able to get back on the water in 2023.
